Fast results for speed reduction of commercial vehicles

Specialist plumbing and central heating contractor PH Jones Ltd has wasted no time in adopting initiatives to help ensure the risks of accidents and fuel consumption are kept to a minimum.

The company, with over 600 commercial vehicles based nationwide has been considering ways road safety can be maximised, making the time plumbing and gas central heating engineers spend on the road as safe as possible.

All employees have to undertake - and pass - a road safety initiative test as part of their induction programme, prior to starting work.  They are also required to be considerate and responsible drivers, both in terms of how they drive; the maintenance of their vehicles and in the fuel consumption.  For these reasons, it has been announced that vehicles will be restricted in their speed, to 60mph.  All new vehicles added to the fleet will be fitted with the device as standard, and over time, current vehicles will undergo the process.

Technical Director, Don Hankey commented:

“PH Jones Ltd is mindful of the environment, and higher speeds create higher emissions and consume higher volumes of fuel.  Our vans already use diesel with lower emissions and each engineer is allocated work within a concentrated area to ensure that travel times and distances are kept short.  This allows the engineers to be efficient and on time for the gas servicing appointments which have been made for them, for example.”

The company actively seeks ways in which environmental impact can be reduced, encouraging staff to reduce, re-use, recycle and operating waste management initiatives.  Achievements include shared transportation to meetings, the collection of used paper and sales of waste copper pipes.
